Once again the pet food industry is being rocked by a massive pet food recall. This latest recall began with a single brand but continues to expand almost daily. We’ll attempt to cover the details as they have unfolded.
April 30, 2012 – Diamond Pet Foods is expanding a voluntary recall to include Diamond Puppy Formula dry dog food. The company took this precautionary measure because sampling revealed Salmonella in the product. The recalled Diamond Puppy Formula dry dog food was manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods in Gaston, S.C., and distributed in the following 12 states:
- Alabama
- Florida
- Georgia
- Kentucky
- Maryland
- Michigan
- North Carolina
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Virginia
The product may have been further distributed to additional states through pet food channels. The company is working directly with distributors and retailers that carry these products to remove them as quickly as possible from the supply chain. Diamond Pet Foods apologizes for any potential issues this may cause pet owners and their dogs.
Pet owners, who are unsure if the product they purchased is included in the recall, or who would like replacement product or a refund, may contact Diamond Pet Foods at 800-442-0402, 8 am – 6 pm EST, Monday through Friday.
Diamond Pet Food Suspends Delivery of All Brands made in South Carolina

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Adult Light Formula dry dog food is manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods and was distributed in Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia, who may have further distributed the product to other states, through pet food channels.

05/04/12- Diamond Pet Foods Release
Diamond Pet Foods has issued a voluntary recall of limited batches of their Diamond and Diamond Naturals dry pet food formulas manufactured between December 9, 2011, and April 7, 2012 due to Salmonella concerns. Diamond Pet Foods apologizes for any potential issues this may have caused pet owners and their pets.
Although none of the products being recalled have tested positive for Salmonella, the company is pulling them from store shelves as a precaution. Diamond Pet Foods is coordinating efforts with federal and state health and regulatory agencies but decided to independently expand the recall to ensure the safety and well-being of customers and their pets.
To determine if your pet food is recalled, consumers should check the production codes on the back of bags. Any production codes that have a number “2” or a “3” in the 9th or 10th digit and an “X” in the 11th digit in the production code should be discarded. The best before dates are December 9, 2012, through April 7, 2013.
The recall affects only products distributed in the following U.S. states and Canada. Further distribution to other pet food channels may have occurred.

Consumers may also go to Diamond Pet Foods Recall Website for more information. The company is working with distributors and retailers to ensure all affected product is removed from shelves.
Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. We do not have any confirmed reports of pet illnesses.
Individuals handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. Healthy people who believe they may have been exposed to Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. According to the Centers for Disease Control, people who are more likely to be affected by Salmonella include infants, children younger than 5 years old, organ transplant patients, people with HIV/AIDS and people receiving treatment for cancer. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have received a limited number of reports of salmonellosis, the illness caused by Salmonella. We are working with the CDC, but due to patient confidentiality, we cannot comment further.

Center for Disease Control (CDC) Links Diamond Pet Food to Human Salmonella Outbreak
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports numerous varieties of pet foods manufactured at the Gaston, SC Diamond Pet Food facility have been linked to fourteen human Salmonella infections in nine states. Fourteen people have been infected.

- A total of 14 individuals infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Infantis have been reported from 9 states.
- The number of ill persons identified in each state is as follows: Alabama (1), Connecticut (1), Michigan (1), Missouri (3), North Carolina (3), New Jersey (1), Ohio (2), Pennsylvania (1), and Virginia (1).
- Among the 9 patients with available information, 5 (56%) were hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
- Multiple brands of dry pet food produced by Diamond Pet Foods at a single manufacturing facility in South Carolina have been linked to some of the human Salmonella infections.
- Consumers should check their homes for recalled dog food products and discard them promptly. People who think they might have become ill after contact with dry pet food or with an animal that has eaten dry pet food should consult their health care providers.
So, this recall is not only affecting pets. Humans are becoming infected across 9 states with 5 people hospitalized. Human illness, now linked to the Diamond manufactured pet foods began in October, 2011. Yet the voluntary recall did not occur until April, 2012…five months later.
Diamond Pet Foods claims no dog illnesses have been reported yet there are reports of dog deaths from several credible sources. You will notice in Diamond’s Press Releases, they state there have been no reported dog illnesses. Of course, Diamond is recognizing the human illnesses.
Freckled Paws will post updates as additional information becomes available. We suggest, if you feed your pet any brand manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods, to error on the side of caution. Assume the product carries Salmonella. 14 people becoming infected across 9 states is reason to use extreme caution. If your furkids show any sign of illness, contact your veterinarian immediately.
